Sandra's Space is a Sculpture Garden located in Summit School in Winston-Salem, NC., created to honor Dr. Sandra Adams, who served as Head of School from 1990 until her retirement in 2008.  

It is a collaborative project between artists Duncan Lewis, Monica Weber Salinas and Barbara Eure

BENCH MOSAICS:

Duncan Lewis created the mosaic sculptures using welded rebar and cement. Monica Weber resurfaced the benches to achieve a smooth surface, designed, created and adhered the mosaic. The bench mosaics was created in-studio using the double direct method: about 36,000 pieces of 3/4"x3/4" vitreous tiles in 24 colors were first permanently glued to fiberglass mesh and subsequently adhered to roughly 160 square feet of bench surface.

The small bench mosaic was fully completed in-studio and the finished piece was transported to the site with a crane. For the large bench, the mesh-mounted mosaic elements were finished in-studio and adhered to the bench structure on-site.

Groups of students visited the studio periodically to learn about the different phases of the mosaic process. 

During  the "Grout Fest",  students participated in grouting, cleaning and polishing the finished benches.
