This first session of my new repurposing workshop series draws attention to the catastrophic impact of plastic contamination and the amazingly fun ways in which we can help make a difference.A plastic utensils fan is just one of innumerable artistic and utilitarian objects that can be made from plastic utensils, bottles, straws, etc. The Spoons & Forks Hand-fan Workshop will start with a PowerPoint presentation on plastic contamination, its consequences and what we can do, followed by a short introduction to the history and culture of hand-fans and an explanation of the process to create and decorate our fans. Each participant will create a hand-fan using plastic utensils and a variety of decorating materials. Most of these are materials that are often discarded at home and can be easily repurposed (utensils, packaging ribbon, pieces of fabric...).If applicable and desired, the finished fans can be used to create a wall installation. This workshop requires a minimum of one 3-hour session or two 1.5-hour sessions for adults and one 4-hour session or two 2-hour sessions for children. It is available for all ages, skill levels and group sizes. Groups of more than 10 children or 15 adults require one or more assistants, depending on group size. In school-settings, the presence of the lead-teacher is required at all times.
